Advancing Black Leadership Strategy

Gilead introduced this multi-year initiative in 2020. Our commitments were developed in partnership with GLOBE (Gilead Leadership Organization of Black Employees) ERG and other ERG leaders after considering the leadership accountability, investment, and business partnership required to make the most impact at Gilead and in our communities.

Development of Diverse Talent

GMentor, our mentoring program, helps connect mentors with mentees and provides resources to share valuable experiences and insights. These meaningful connections support employees’ professional development and expand the impact of diverse perspectives. In the first year of launching in 2020, 558 employees participated in GMentor, and we are excited to see participation continue to grow. Our Sponsorship Program fosters progression and development of key diverse talent. The program provides 22 key diverse leaders at senior levels, development-focused access to our most senior leader sponsors, personalized coaching, and specialized development experiences. 

Diversity & Inclusion Partnerships

We will significantly fund diversity sourcing to cast a wider net for top diverse talent, leverage external leadership development programs, and partner with community organizations addressing racial injustice. To date, GLOBE has partnered with the company on a $1 million donation to organizations fighting social injustice, and Gilead announced a $1 million partnership with Morehouse School of Medicine to build a data platform about the disparate impact of COVID-19 on communities of color.

Sustainability

Gilead operates in many communities around the world. We believe our impact should be positive, enriching and sustainable. Our goal is to promote efforts that minimize our effect on climate change and lower our consumption of natural resources. We seek to increase renewable energy use and recycling efforts, lessen our contribution to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve chemistry practices. Sustainability is core to how we are working to build a better world with people, partners and communities around the globe.

Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

To make good on our commitment to sustainability, Gilead has joined the world’s leading companies to reduce GHG emissions. Climate change presents a material threat to human health and environments worldwide. Gilead is committed to mitigating our impact by doing our part to improve our environmental practices though conservation and pollution prevention. This includes reaching our Science Based Target to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 46% by 2030 from a 2019 base year, and also to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 15% over the same timeframe.

When Gilead set out to design a new research building, the company had big aspirations. The aim was to not just deliver a facility that achieved the scientific ambitions of today but to build a space that would encourage researchers to focus on their scientific visions of tomorrow.

HepConnect

In response to the intersecting opioid and HCV epidemics, Gilead Sciences launched HepConnect, a five-year, multi-million-dollar initiative to help address the increase in HCV and support community partnerships in Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.

Sponsorship

Alkermes is proud to be part of the broader healthcare community supporting those with addiction, serious mental illness and cancer. In 2020 and 2021, we sponsored non-profit organizations such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the Partnership to End Addiction and the American Cancer Society while continuing to bring awareness to programs and initiatives of other organizations that work to improve the lives of persons affected by mental illness, substance use disorder and cancer.
By 2030, up to 70% of People with HIV will be over the age of 50.

HIV Age Positively

HIV Age Positively has awarded more than $17.6 million in grants to support 30 organizations — from healthcare organizations to advocacy groups working to address the interrelated challenges within the healthcare system and the general HIV community — addressing stigma, loneliness and better coordination of care.
